The Fourth's friendly overtures and recognition of the clan's contributions to the third shinobi war effort and village security finally did some work to thaw relations between Uchiha and village kept chilly by previous friction between clan and Hokage. The current Hokage, albeit an unrepresentative Uchiha himself, being from the clan has helped accord some status via association as well .
These days, the clan is viewed with somewhat less fear, making it easier for them to function within the village. They still serve as the military police, handling both "domestic" crimes and village security against outside threat. They are police for Konoha's shinobi and civilians, as well as fire and other disaster relief forces.
